Yves St Laurent, one of the world’s most influential fashion designers, died on Sunday 1st June, at the age of 71 after a year long battle with brain cancer.
St Laurent has long been credited, along with Chanel, to freeing women’s wardrobes by challenging what was deemed socially acceptable for women to wear.
‘In his own words, Saint Laurent once said he felt “fashion was not only supposed to make women beautiful, but to reassure them, to give them confidence, to allow them to come to terms with themselves.”‘ (ELAINE GANLEY)
Saint Laurent designed instant classics, which decades later, are still incredibly stylish. The most recognisable is his signature “Le Smoking”, a tuxedo suit that tailored for the female form.
Yves St Laurent will be remembered, along with Dior and Chanel, as the last of a great revolutionary fashion generation that made Paris the fashion capital of the world.
